escapril day 25: pick an animal

I can never sleep when the moon is full
Sometimes I wonder if part of me is wolf.
Maybe just a bud of wolf’s-heart that could
Flower if I let it, or maybe it’s a key in a lock
That I just need to turn to let the wolf in.
In a full moon, my eyes open so wide with awake,
The reflection becomes so bright it could blind you.
My heart is howling and hungry and sometimes
I want to bleed just so I can write about how it tastes.
In the corner of my eye there’s a wolf hiding
In my shadow, and it smiles at me and I know
There is a beauty in the darkness of the nights I can’t sleep
When my window is haloed by moonlight.
