escapril day 25: extinction

I’ve been to the zoo a few times,
seen the giraffes, I fed one once!
I giggled as it took the carrot from my hand –
probably about as big as its eyelid
(unless that was all a dream).
A couple of years ago I drew them.
I stood and watched and drew the giraffes,
four times my size, and so alive.
They were hard to draw though –
necks too long and they moved too much.

One day, I might take my grandson
or granddaughter to the zoo,
and there might be the giraffe enclosure,
empty, or perhaps occupied
by something else – and I may say:
“I remember when there were giraffes in there,
I drew them once!”
And my grandson or granddaughter might say:
“But grandma, why can’t I see the giraffes?”
And I will heartbreakingly reply,
“I’m sorry sweetie, there are no more.”

I live across the road from a river, and a park
where koalas make their homes in the gum trees.
I know when there is one around,
because people will crowd underneath
watching it munch eucalyptus leaves.
Suddenly everyone becomes friends,
like the runner who told me to watch out
for the koala about 200 metres ahead.
Camera in hand, I took a photograph –
I was upset I didn’t have a better lens
to capture the moment.

One day, I might take my grandson
or granddaughter on a walk, along the river,
along the park, and I might say:
“I remember when I used to see koalas along here,
I took a photo of one once!”
And my grandson or granddaughter may say:
“Oh Grandma! I would love to see a koala!”
And I will heartbreakingly disclose:
“I’m so sorry darling, there are no more.”
